I don't know if it's the same all over, but around here it's becoming

I don't know if it's the same all over, but around here it's becoming increasingly difficult for young drivers to learn the skills they need to become safe drivers. driving lessons used to be taught in schools here, but unfortunately, that's no longer the case. Now, young drivers and their parents are forced to find their own driving instructor and their own driving schools. Plus, what used to be covered in your school registration is now paid for out of pocket by the families. And, in these tough economic times that's becoming increasingly difficult.
And, if the costs and hassles weren't enough, they must also worry about credibility. It's difficult to know which schools are credible, and if you can trust an instructor. I don't know what guidelines a driving school or an instructor must adhere to, but if it's not closely monitored there's no way to know if those guidelines are being followed. All we can do is trust that they are and hope for the best.
When I was learning to drive driver's ed was taught through the school. We were in a classroom for months, learning all that we needed to know before we ever set foot in a car. It was very beneficial to learn everything ahead of time instead of trying to learn it at the same time as trying to practice your driving. Unfortunately, young drivers today don't have that opportunity. They're trying to learn about driving at the same time that they're actually driving. Thus, they are dealing with too many distractions and creating unsafe driving conditions.
There is a proposal here to raise the legal driving age from 16 years old to 18 years old, and I don't think its such a bad idea. Many 16-year-olds aren't mature enough to handle the responsibility. They are too distracted with school and their friends. Giving them two more years to learn and to grow and mature sounds like a pretty good idea to me. They may not like it, but it's for their own good. If raising the legal driving age can save lives, I can't understand why anyone would be opposed.
