My driving lessons course was held at my high school. It was going to take me a couple of months to complete it. I had taken several driving practice test with my father before I ever started the instruction at school.

Several of the boys in my class wanted to drive a motorcycle instead of a car. All the instruction we took was for either automobiles or a motorcycle course. During the written part, the boys who wanted to drive a motorcycle had to pass some special sections of the course for hand signals and changing lanes while riding with other drivers on a motorcycle, other than that the difference in instruction was none existent.

Several weeks went by during the summer before I took my driving course at school. My father and I went over the driving handbook he picked up at the DMV. When he was satisfied I understood all of the rules of the road, we set out for a stretch of old roads no one used anymore. How he knew where these places where is a mystery to me. He ran around this area when he was a kid and he might have used these roads before they were re-routed and no longer used anymore.

The driving practice test I was taking with my father was in fact a good way to prepare for that course. I had to drive with my dad in the front seat of our old Chevy and he would instruct me as to what my driving practice test would involve for that day. I also think this was good in another way, it gave me the confidence I needed before I got into a driving situation with a stranger to teach me to drive. I had done it before and with a man I totally trusted.

He would ask me about road signs and what did I think where telling me about the road. The only thing I hadn't done and was nervous about was getting on and off of the highway. It didn't take me long to get the hang of it and that feeling of control instead of nerves was back with me almost from he first couple of times I had to do it. All in all I was very ready and prepared for the driving practice course I took in school, because of my father and his instruction.
