On one occasion I had to go to a school, and I had to choose out of a variety of automatic driving schools. It was hard, and it was confusing to learn such a new way to drive. It didn't feel natural to not have to use the clutch every shift.
I had been driving a classic car ever since I could drive, it was the way all cars should be made in my opinion. But my wife had opted to get a new van, it helped her get around, and take the grandchildren out. I had no arguments, but we really only had need for one vehicle, so it was a choice between the new van, or my classic car. The classic car lost.
I went to the school gingerly, surrounded by all these young teenagers. Nobody even gave me a strange look though so I was relieved. Then the instructor came. He told everyone the basic rules and handed out the pamphlet. As I went to grab one he went, "Sorry pops, we only supply these to the kids taking the lessons." Then I had everyones attention, and I wanted to just walk away and pretend I was one of those kid's parent. But I knew my wife would wonder why I hadn't just done the simple lesson, so I said, "No young Sir, I am here to learn the lesson. I paid the lesson price, and want to learn, please hand me a pamphlet."
Driving those new vehicles wasn't as bad as it seemed. No, it didn't feel quite right. I didn't feel quite as connected with the truck, or like I had as much control as I had with my older car. But I learned how to drive them, and when I went home to my lady, she was proud of me. All the snickers were worth it to know she was happy with what I did.
Driving that van she bought wasn't as awful as I thought it was going to be anyways. Now we can take all the grandkids out for lunch, or to the zoo.
